Planned Parenthood Federation of America can trace it’s roots back Brownsville. Founded in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, the clinic was located on 46 Amboy Street. Only open for nine days before raided and shut down by the police, the clinic mainly provided sex education and contraceptive advice.

When the clinic opened, allegedly more than one hundred women and twenty men lined up for consultations. After a week and a half the clinic was raided by the NYPD. Sanger was arrested and the clinic’s supplies and case histories confiscated. Later, Sanger’s sister Ethel, who worked in the clinic, was also arrested. The sisters were convicted but their trial eventually was overturned. Despite their arrests, their work helped change the laws governing birth control and sex education.
