Open Spaces

In partnership with NYC Parks, the Horticulture Society of New York and NYC Department of Transportation, the BID maintains, beautifies, and hosts community events at Brownsville’s parks, pedestrian plazas and public spaces.

Zion Triangle | Pitkin Plaza

Our gateway from the west, Zion Triangle-Pitkin Plaza is host to many of the BID’s most popular community events, such as the Pitkin Ave Tree Lighting, Halloween Harvest Festival and Yoga in the Plaza. The plants, flowers, and trees in the plaza are maintained by the Horticulture Society of New York.

Betsy Head Park

Just a 1/4 mile south of Pitkin Avenue is Brownsville’s most well visited open space, Betsy Head Park. In the past 5 years the park has seen over $30M in capital improvements. The 11 acre park offers something for everyone with a new skatepark, running track, basketball and handball courts, baseball and footballs fields, and outdoor swimming pool. In 2016 the park added the Imagination Playground, a space inspiring kid’s imaginations through fantasy and cooperative play.

Street Seat at Sal & Paul’s Pizzeria

In partnership with NYC DOT, the BID installed a Street Seat at Sal and Paul’s Pizzeria. The public seating is a popular place for shoppers to take a break or to sit and enjoy one of Sal and Paul’s famous slices. The seating is installed in the Spring and removed in late Autumn. Daily maintenance of the seat is provided by the staff at Sal and Paul’s Pizzeria.
