Pitkin Avenue BID Organic Compost Initiative
The Pitkin Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Green City Force, is committed to making Brownsville a greener and more sustainable neighborhood. Through our Organics Compost Initiative, we help local businesses lower their commercial waste bills by diverting food scraps from landfills and transforming them into nutrient-rich compost.
How It Works
Food Scrap Collection – We partner with local businesses, including Pitkin Caribbean, to collect food scraps that would otherwise be discarded as waste.
Composting Process – The collected organic materials are transported to their composting site at 60 Glenmore, managed by Green City Force.
Sustainable Impact – Through this initiative, we reduce landfill waste, cut down on waste disposal costs, and create valuable compost that enriches our community gardens and green spaces.
Why Compost?
Lower Waste Bills – The majority of commercial waste is organic. By diverting food scraps, businesses can significantly reduce their waste disposal costs.
Environmental Benefits – Composting reduces methane emissions from landfills and helps build healthier soil.
Community Growth – Our compost supports local gardens and green initiatives, fostering a more sustainable and resilient Brownsville.
