Pitkin Avenue BID

The Pitkin Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) is a nonprofit community-based organization serving businesses on Pitkin Avenue between Howard Avenue and Mother Gaston Blvd and Rockaway Avenue between Glenmore and Belmont Avenues in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The BID delivers services to our business and property owners and has a meaningful impact on the Brownsville community through quality of life initiatives.

History

Since its founding in 1993, the BID has provided services and programming aimed at making Pitkin Avenue a better place to live, work, and shop. We continue to develop standards to further improve our sanitation and public safety programs and strengthen our relationships with city agencies to deliver the best possible services to the Pitkin Avenue small business community. Our streetscape beautification programs focus on aesthetically improving our streets, sidewalks, and storefronts. Our marketing campaigns serve to drive business to the district and help bring a sense of identity to our neighborhood. We remain committed to providing the Pitkin Avenue community with the best in services and enhancements with efficiency and effectiveness. As always, we welcome and encourage your input and assistance as we work together to build and celebrate a better Brownsville.

What We do

The BID is primarily funded through a special assessment that is paid by district business and property owners.  BID funds support the following core programs:

  • Sanitation
We provide daily supplemental sidewalk cleaning as well as monthly graffiti removal services to maintain a clean appearance along the Pitkin and Rockaway Avenue commercial corridors. Our clean team works seven days a week to keep our sidewalks and streets clean.

  • Marketing and Placemaking
We promote the district by hosting several seasonal events and through targeted marketing campaigns. During the winter holiday season we install string lighting to brighten up the corridor and draw residents and visitors to our businesses.

  • Beautification
To maintain and enhance the Pitkin Avenue streetscape, we design and execute multiple initiatives to beautify the district. These include the Transform/Restore: Brownsville murals project and façade improvement assistance through the Pitkin Avenue Renaissance Program.

  • Retail Attraction and Retention
The BID works to recruit and retain quality businesses in the district by collecting and distributing market data, providing supplemental marketing for vacant retail spaces and through business assistance workshops.
