Connected Corridors: Envisioning the Future of Our Main Streets

The BID is graciously receiving funding and technical assistance to envision the future of Brownsville public spaces through the Local Center, a partnership between the Urban Design Forum and the Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (“ANHD”). The Local Center aims to address that gap by supporting BIDs in reimagining their public spaces through installations, activations, and capital improvements that reclaim public space, drive foot traffic, and strengthen neighborhood connectivity and safety. Read more here.

Lighting Installation

We are working with Studio Cooke John Architecture and Design to transform Zion Triangle Plaza and other public spaces along Pitkin Avenue into welcoming destinations for Brownsville residents, shoppers, and visitors. We have hosted several public engagement sessions in various locations. Our lighting installation is being unveiled on Saturday, November 9, 2024 please see below.

“Brownsville Is” Reveal

Thank you for making the "Brownsville Is… Lighting Installation Reveal" a tremendous success! Your presence and enthusiasm truly made this event unforgettable. We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. The pride and spirit of Brownsville were palpable, and we are grateful for your unwavering support.

Through community votes, five powerful words emerged, each capturing a unique facet of Brownsville’s identity. These words now illuminate our installation, celebrating the heart, spirit, and resilience of our neighborhood.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Local Center, a partnership between the Urban Design Forum and the Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development, for their funding and support. This installation marks a significant step in our journey to reclaim public spaces, drive foot traffic, and strengthen our neighborhood.

This event would not have been possible without the contributions of many dedicated individuals and organizations.

Lighting Installation Process

Throughout our engagement process, we conducted a series of both passive and active outreach efforts, including social media campaigns, surveys, tabling at events, and flyering. We aim to ensure that the improvements and programming are implemented with the voices of Brownsville residents, shoppers, and visitors. Below is a presentation of the community engagement process.

Lighting Design

From these activities, we gathered valuable input that helped shape the updated renderings of our lighting installation, produced by the Studio Cooke John team.

Concept Sketches Produced by Studio Cooke John

Concept Sketch’s options 2, 3 and 4 received the most votes and Studio Cooke John designed a final version which is a combination of the three.

What is Brownsville to you?

Community members shared what Brownsville means to them, and from these conversations, eight key words emerged. We then opened a voting poll for about three weeks, allowing residents to select their preferred words or suggest others not on the list.

Voting Board for the words that describe Brownsville that will go on the post.

Post Colors

In our final stage we asked the community to choose a color for the post.
